It was love at first sight because of the name. And then the introduction… good heavens! I also want to one day be an old lady in an untidy garden.</p> <p>This book introduced me to the world of antique roses: tough old girls that thrive in the worst of conditions with little or no care. Admirable. I sent away for the <a href="https://www.antiqueroseemporium.com/" target="_blank">Antique Rose Emporium’s</a> catalog and started dreaming. </p> <p>Then, on my wedding anniversary this year, Mr. Farmgirl treated me to a trip to our local nursery. I love to go there and wander around. This trip, I was looking for a Wisteria. I left with 2 grapevines, a honeysuckle, some Dinosaur Kale and Rainbow Swiss Chard, and 3 antique roses that I found on sale for $5 each! (The danger of wandering around this place.)</p> <p>The ARE sells their roses for quite a bit more than that. I felt so spoiled! And excited. The names on the tags were indecisive- antique rose, unknown. <em>OH BOY! It’s a Surprise!</em> The kid in me exclaimed. </p> <p>I brought them home and watered them well. Within a couple of days, they bloomed. One is a plain 5 petal pink flower with a spicy pepper smell. The next is a beautiful pink flower with a delicate spiced-rose scent. The third, and the one in this picture, is a creamy eloquent flower with a slight touch of pink in its center at full maturity. The scent is pure rose- like the roses from 80 years ago, and so pure and airy that you have to place your nose inside the flower and inhale it. Ahhhh. Bliss.</p> <div id="scid:0767317B-992E-4b12-91E0-4F059A8CECA8:cd93f2f4-ccc6-4b77-afbc-fe4b4187624c" class="wlWriterEditableSmartContent" style="float: none; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px">Technorati Tags: <a href="http://technorati.com/tags/garden" rel="tag">garden</a>,<a href="http://technorati.com/tags/dirty+hands" rel="tag">dirty hands</a>,<a href="http://technorati.com/tags/antique+rose" rel="tag">antique rose</a>,<a href="http://technorati.com/tags/great+value" rel="tag">great value</a></div> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjw-RSRKmW_myhypqTOq6T19KwQNt34Bubvd2Y0hGqgj9KN1EVZ6jpYdfrxRn24IHMWWrqgMo2c3kIKWBh3bYoSHcCfZaTqFL7R4FgOW__fw1HqsyudWRLJjibAxzm6USpEzbBCPp3K8iA/s1600-h/20141022%25252017.22.31%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img title="20141022 17.22.31" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="20141022 17.22.31" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8ZiYX0LZBoIYNYGRh2CBOzAItzjppDL5Sk0fWVaH08NxJ-Bcz0QuulbuhwrBb14ziOZ0KWy7V-gi4HTVsZ_6e9dyThn6IItkSNCLutIOZmwXcA6IpF7QuU-JPTxJUJ8nmp5gRSjkCLopq/?imgmax=800" width="468" height="468"></a></p> Phyllis Franklinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06949529897771159289noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-122298134287752449.post-56876915441505511992014-11-14T14:28:00.001-08:002014-11-14T14:28:07.620-08:00Finally! A Series of Children’s Books That I Love<p align="center">When Lyli was born in 2006, I shopped and searched for the perfect children’s books. I saw many that I loved and many that I didn’t. But none were exactly what I wanted. I dreamed about making my own, and I had all these ideas, but no artistic talent. I really can’t draw. My stick figures actually look like sticks.</p> <p align="center">Then I thought, <em>but I can take pictures! </em>I had taken a class on Photoshop in college. I made a couple of books and tried to sell them to publishers. No luck. I priced some printing shops. No way. So I printed them as 4 x 6 pictures and placed the “pages” in a small photo album flip book. Lyli loved her books. I gave a few away as gifts and then let it slide. Enter Kindle Fire. I have self-published a couple of children’s books on Kindle. They look amazing on my smart phone, so I imagine they look great on Kindle Fire, for which they are designed. And the kids LOVE them. Mission Accomplished.</p> <p align="center"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwG0_CGDHutGQX0PZ-7HT1FO8HjNSzjkTIKfREXIbfL3A4b56Z3F2Jcw28koofq17-Cy0K-cQlRA1pT3EBleWNlOmLI_lGx8VpAInrh_rnYSR8FirucJS_sX_iEhJ2Mo8fJiyy5OEhI0Cd/s1600-h/1%252520tiff%25255B1%25255D.png"><img title="1 tiff" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="1 tiff" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg478YYQxG-W5ol-vm5ssjeW2e5dew13WPPXFKW6wAm14c-r8zDBjv0QE8oq8tYq2aTHLfdMyl3t9383D0rJx28KClJ28-SNGMZfWUA7oUbIpTiqnv2TdaXdnhLIqJGAR-jZ-RLEUoNrEjL/?imgmax=800" width="341" height="499"></a></p> <p align="center">Baby’s First Counting Book is free today on Kindle!</p> <p align="center">And my most favorite so far… (and also the first in the NikiBooks series)…</p> <p align="center"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfWTybpz2-5-MWTrtSATbsrFH8kS-13g6RF3erxArFBaD0yubCr9HcnHCYkWc5IcjCRiHqwamMrrI7HClqFDUGrA4LtLEpLiqrDj9FzkOoVvB6gY0doYJs5Yhl54TLJ5HtYjnMWaI8qRSD/s1600-h/1%252520Niki%252520Cover%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="1 Niki Cover" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="1 Niki Cover" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1dCIt6mTGjmQCkkfaeol_GKd7YdnohzuiLNUaYSCkJl8n_HtoZgthVpYaPdjlbBgBn2HPtHDzD9ps8TUHZ93ObB2A4usDYhRqtETIaZNhGzVtsY6I7zHQ8qjHiLaTYP9Ml4PiruxYwHhU/?imgmax=800" width="427" height="437"></a></p> Phyllis Franklinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06949529897771159289noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-122298134287752449.post-22239916333588915612014-11-11T16:21:00.001-08:002014-11-11T16:21:38.515-08:00Old Junk Gets a New Life on My HomeStead<p>I love to find old junk and clean it up, spray paint it, and add it to my homestead garden.</p> <p>Here’s the windmill that someone abandoned. If it was just me, I would enjoy this evening with a good book, a nice fire (I wish- FLORIDA), and a cup of coffee. But since I have such cute and creative kids, I think we will go trick-or-treating.<br>
Happy Halloween!<br></p>

My dear friend Mary knits me the cutest stuff for my babies. But my knitting skills are limited. So, to return the favor, I made a clothespin bag for her. (And one for me, too, because I found these adorable Mermaid overalls at the thrift store.) You just buy some cute overalls (I chose a gorgeous baby-dress for Mary) and sew up the bottom. So, I decided to publish a print version. Mainly because I want to save one for each of my two unassisted homebirth babies. <p>It can be purchased at CreateSpace (an Amazon company) here: <p><a href="https://www.createspace.com/5033096">https://www.createspace.com/5033096</a> <p>It will be available on Amazon in a couple of days, and of course, it is still available on Kindle. <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-0ZeR_GdlXck/VEmtM7NJx3I/AAAAAAAABIQ/300Wv4cJC0w/s1600-h/Unassisted_HomeBirth_Cover_for_Kindle%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="Unassisted_HomeBirth_Cover_for_Kindle" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="Unassisted_HomeBirth_Cover_for_Kindle" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtuK-Wy_rJpFIa6n6JKNSeeYXRun1qNzZHrDB7Zr7YHCKelwokpg0TRSgAgJiYnsmAHTnuAWeE3hhYJNstnEKN9tbID5646d_qwXwHhyhmzh7WiZkjDEFPap1NlkXnCyK-uuy3LbkTde98/?imgmax=800" width="252" height="380"></a>The Kindle cover looks slightly different than the print version. We have low areas, ponds, and high-clay soils. <br>
To best utilize these natural features, I planted some pumpkins and Hubbard squash in containers with drain holes in the bottom, then set them in the swamp. TaDa!  Raised bed self watering container!</p>

There is finally a breeze after a long hot stifling summer. I can work in the garden again- weeding, replenishing, sowing, planting. And there is a stillness in the air, a quietness that I can feel in my soul, refreshing my energy and lifting my spirit.</p> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdgMvLwCOj9FO73o61bINDnE9yoeYtylPbfUxDZ1VQR7jrDYreeCee6gGqA-bkQy1Wkf4ptymetyiyMaDLIkljwix75fyySUupJg32Rv1N3Y5P63GvlHZ0VSbN_D9D35qj1Qx0gWlRxxM0/s1600-h/20140906%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img title="20140906" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="20140906" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoSZnUJRIPe1YvQ_UdVLBh4AuW5q8khDKp9k_Q4WTuOgk9WkqEu69-MulchD1kUH5WgRa1qGHv8muTGNXx9G4KbkA6zLGxTrychnttSObujB6pkI0HJlP_JS_x0Td40aO0qeOJgFTqEkfq/?imgmax=800" width="300" height="480"></a></p> Phyllis Franklinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06949529897771159289noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-122298134287752449.post-57357959461550566642014-08-28T06:28:00.001-07:002014-08-28T06:37:45.220-07:00Farm? or FarmNot?<p>Is this a farm? Uhhh, no. Not at all. It was—by my definition anyway. We had chickens. I had a little garden. It was a beginning farm… a mini-farm.</p> <p>But now the chickens are gone, and my gardens are neglected. It’s a weird feeling. Not failure, exactly. Just… struggle. It’ll take years and a lot of work to turn this place into a mini-farm.</p> <p>So we continue to work, and pray, and live, and raise our children. My number one job right now is Mommy. Also wife, teacher, chef, driver… the list goes on, you know.</p> <p>Even so, every now and then I just can’t help myself. I got a little crafty this week and repainted this yard sale find. My plans include adding a few more containers to my tiny garden and hopefully getting some veggies and greens this winter.</p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-QkRh8ZwhWOk/U_8uX0dfuPI/AAAAAAAABEY/BdcYD95jWO4/s1600-h/IMG_5498%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img title="IMG_5498" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="IMG_5498" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdumtnz1dUt4hF8jlVz2WY0Ds5_JVXYmoTKCnz1wsPGfTa4hqkyTbMAO8u2aCHbzuj9FHvPVHMUh9ydORg-dew7cav874N6tfm-HRY8S-Z8rsZxZmVmRaVj3d0PNbuj3G7JxEc8PaKpCIC/?imgmax=800" width="495" height="495"></a></p> Phyllis Franklinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06949529897771159289noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-122298134287752449.post-59136299481391312062014-08-25T12:21:00.001-07:002014-08-25T12:21:20.957-07:00Double the Yum<p>I got my first double-yolked egg today!</p> <p>It was so exciting. Unfortunately, it wasn’t from my chickens. I don’t have any hens right now. :( I got these eggs at the farmer’s market. It was so neat to crack it open and see two yolks slip out. </p> <p>No, I didn’t take a picture. I crack my eggs directly into the pan to save dish washing. I know about the chemical residue they leave on your clothes, the toxins they leach into your skin and the environment, and you know what else? The top basket is full of tomatoes Lyli and I picked today.</p> Phyllis Franklinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06949529897771159289noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-122298134287752449.post-34211222165255460732013-06-30T16:07:00.001-07:002013-06-30T16:07:08.841-07:00Grace Under Pressure<p align="center"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiD-C_zEktmZN9_g5W2EKpyKNT_lPUAZ9mA8_5zKBEK0T8bv4TbfmICcTLBTm-YhKcDs9Kmt4uslnFj1-JP6r1iK5s7607vsiVVLMmFD3P68n3_mRdIGwI25kv87YJMChPKE74POhIsRpqS/s1600-h/20130630%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img title="20130630" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="20130630" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZPGga2TehzGWCH5boB8284wHXmX-_U3nfNXu6zsZJ6Kel1niXgVbmD5k8BQAXNapt4jy5ygsUooROzlUZAJeM5rnoXuAzOb__20AZ5NHk7b9Us36PDcGDdvfeBmmJlhO8FKSbQfGYuqsT/?imgmax=800" width="388" height="299"></a> </p> <p align="center">This picture has nothing to do with the post, but look how pretty. These were growing wild at the edge of the pond this morning.</p> <p align="center">A helpful babysitter allowed for a trip to the Jacksonville Farmer’s Market yesterday. I am so excited to have scored a box of tomatoes, a box of corn, three bags of onions, a box of okra, a box of chilis and half a box of hot banana peppers for a grand total of</p> <p align="center">$60.00</p> <p align="center">The thing is, most of it is old and starting to turn. Quick freezing and canning is key to getting this kind of deal. Buying in bulk is a lot of work in the kitchen.</p> <p align="center">So today, on Ben’s day off, I’d planned to can and freeze and wash and chop and roast and cook all day. (Got 7 quarts of mixed veggies put up last night.) </p> <p align="center">But… the power went off. And stayed off for 4 and 1/2 hours. We had another storm.</p> <p align="center">Oh- that brings up another thought--- we’ve finally named this place.</p> <p align="center">SOGGY BOTTOM MINI-FARM</p> <p align="center">Because it is. Ben mowed the yard this morning (before the rain came) and said that it was his first time ever mud-bogging on a lawn mower. :)</p> <p align="center">So, now I am canning. And I’m going to work as much as possible tonight to put up corn, okra, and make and can salsa. We go through 12-15 pints of salsa per year. It’s a great thing to have on hand. I love salsa on baked potatoes or chips or burritos. Sometimes if I don’t have any fresh tomatoes, I’ll put salsa on my salad greens. And this is my first year putting chilis and hot peppers in. I think I’ll roast the chilis first. Any thoughts?</p> <p align="center">So 4 hours behind schedule, actually a little more because the power went out in the middle of canning a batch of mushrooms, so they are in the canner now- had to start all over. And here’s where the grace under pressure comes in…</p> <p align="center">I’m praying for it.</p> <p align="center">Lol. No, really. We had a fun time playing games and practicing drums for Lyli’s drum lessons. I had some canned chicken in the pantry, and the lasagna was already cooked for me to put it together and into the oven for lunch. So we rolled some chicken salad into half pieces of lasagna and ate chicken salad rolls for lunch. I have to say, they were delicious.</p> <p align="center">But I’m much happier now, with my hot cup of tea and air conditioning. </p> <p align="center">I am spoiled and I love it!</p> Phyllis Franklinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06949529897771159289noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-122298134287752449.post-46593437989960302722013-06-27T14:16:00.001-07:002013-06-27T14:16:41.655-07:00It’s A Blooming Miracle<p align="center">…that I was able to grow anything at all this summer.</p> <p align="center">I know most Yankee gardeners think that we have it made in Florida. But what we have is an actually short growing season before the sun burns everything up. Including us- the heat chases us indoors just like the snow chases you.</p> <p align="center">And bugs. We have LOTS of bugs. Big mutant mosquitoes. Lovely little moths that lay their eggs all over my garden; their offspring especially love my tomatoes. Aphids. Stinging gnats. Sometimes, they’re great- like the three gorgeous gardenias that have supplied my kitchen window with fragrant blooms for the past few weeks. Once Spring sprung, we got really busy around here. And I only remember that it’s been awhile since I’ve blogged after dark, when I can’t take pictures.</p> <p>But here are some of the work we’ve been doing around here.</p> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnRdksChkJ9qkPB4UBnAuozJTrLJe_MYZwqbQyL1Y52GbPArLsBnNf6Ro4Y1qHhh_lglEtSnnZwSZR5rqkjeBv0mNncsCd8b-CQT9zgFwmk2YuWvEbemy8fiMr5c4uQdH61ppiiaJmFzvR/s1600-h/20130329c%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px" title="20130329c" border="0" alt="20130329c" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidTxjaBx2PYQc-QTQDs-Eg11KsLWdshy9hh_rBsv-ef48Jq1heaQ_JNkqMxNx29zHBbu-CCrOZbjhHyGM_8DUVpvzpBAxpwdBdYmzKCJOf81xFA4tN_YF8BppF3klcGeMT1efCq2jTVRJ5/?imgmax=800" width="386" height="294"></a> </p> <p>Whenever I couldn’t get outside, I hung curtains and pictures. I almost have the house finished. I think.</p> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj13GT2deHZQDotNB9BYCvXBBvZC3IsprN6LmpXn1OkKPSdMyaVs73UjIXwDPeDgZR11khgVNYseCPgUOWycheoVMPjxJMnkvk6Ut1v6De2i-XW_9YjkneEZoqIsbHla-8WNXC2rh0q2jSw/s1600-h/20130416c%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px" title="20130416c" border="0" alt="20130416c" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCTcMXMzI8hNvd14L3xp_7uB30Bh20FHX8yMzSHreTWVbXyGJq7AB-XY9orMssb7gaZoeMmjOMwqCkDM93OuN3lfFhenZtOJDG8qVPN9Jkw2DwehQnDMV3N2jiTm0aC-0Xu9ylJIhXUJCK/?imgmax=800" width="373" height="284"></a> </p> <p></p> <p>We tilled up a garden area. Only to test the soil and find it too alkaline and completely devoid of nutrients. And this is really too big of a plot for me to work by hand alone. Back to the drawing board.</p> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZpvQA8JxSQdBWAXzQBNL-1shsyOgiKaQascYSmdipJbqtzKAFjQ1tleLJVGo89_s2V5bbvbjwOMfT7lEH3DkucxMKu6PNnVrVVyFQ83V8mavgxRjxi15kylk7oAxKIlQ3HKwKFf_Ehnz8/s1600-h/20130416e%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px" title="20130416e" border="0" alt="20130416e" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-FhELSHK_2II/UW7xCdRFbNI/AAAAAAAAA58/vLTJznP3S0k/20130416e_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="391" height="298"></a> </p> <p>Since the chickens took over my fenced garden area, I think I will put up a wooden picket fence (hmm, made out of used pallets?) and a pretty gate bordering the recently tilled area. And then fill the area with raised beds. I think it will be a celebration of different types of gardening. Wooden raised beds, square foot gardens, a blueberry/blackberry hedge.</p> <p>We planted some fruit trees in the backyard. They’re hard to see in the picture because of our toys (and the fact that the trees are small babies). We planted a pear, two figs, and three citrus. We also planted a Golden Rain Tree and two Sycamores for shade. </p> <p>I plan to take those steps (leftover from the foreclosure mess) and turn them into a potting/garden table. That’s our plan for Sunday if the weather permits. :)</p> <p>I have hopes of getting some grapes planted soon, as well as another pear.</p> <p>-Blessings!</p> Phyllis Franklinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06949529897771159289noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-122298134287752449.post-21804955556398209002013-04-17T11:45:00.001-07:002013-04-17T11:45:34.413-07:00The Lazy Way to Water<p> </p> <p align="center">Have you seen these?</p> <p align="center"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizMJlcb73Dr-jOBbIumYOsgkuy-jC4UwEXWTQSP0JYuXDstQ7IvMAgdpf_ZO1ZNkysykzlfN_rGGBei8e2lt8GCo0uWqXigFvtlUb4klB8jnmXzDJWYSWo1yu2RUELi143B4RZd4bRR60Z/s1600-h/20130416a%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px" title="20130416a" border="0" alt="20130416a" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnpw4ttoM1XddSt81HTjKbjaXQGNZqpxnbkSqSKuMSLIR2ZDKOFYHPKkO6cMJMohFwnEaS-9DmUQKsdwuHaIatUhyphenhyphenVtlFB0MR_sOg9clqNhZbfRwp6SBScfz5JlmuuJTMNrlFen6D_2NFA/?imgmax=800" width="394" height="300"></a> </p> <p align="center">I love them.
